Hi,
I had this posted on Windows XP Help & Support but they advised posting this here.
Is there a step by step procedure for installing MS Virtual Server 2005 R2 and then installing Windows Vista Beta 2 on it as a Virtual Machine?
Thanks

I don't know if there's a "step-by-step" but here's what I did:
a) Install IIS under WinXP SP2; b) Deny adding IIS Exceptions to Firewall (I wanted only local access) c) Then install VS 2005 R2; I took just about all the defaults. d) After I got totally confused :o) I then created a VM for Vista. e) Don't forget to create a Virtual HD for it before you install.
I couldn't find anything equivalent to the convenient shares of Virtual PC so I had to actually make Vista join a PTP Network in order to do a little file sharing with the Host OS.
Hope this helps. -AS

Hi,
I just did it. I had to install VS first because I never had. Platform is homebuilt AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2GHz), 2GB RAM. Mobo is ASUS A8N-VM. Uses on-board video.
Here's the way I did it:
a) Install IIS on WinXP SP2; because I wanted local-only access, I denied allowing IIS exceptions in the Firewall; b) Install Virtual Server 2005 R2; I took defaults for the most part; Again, I wanted only local access to the VM; c) Create the VM for Vista; d) Create the Virtual HD for Vista (DON'T Forget This!) e) Install Vista;
On MY platform, it took about 1:15 hrs including VM Additions install. I really missed the ad-hoc virtual disk ability of Virtual PC. Maybe I just didn't know how to find it. Anyway, I joined a local PTP Network to share folders with the HOST OS.
It works. It's not snappy. But considering the same install under Virtual PC 2004 SP1 took over 6 and a quarter hours, I feel pretty good about it.
Good luck, -AS

I managed to install Vista on Virtual PC ( about 1.5 hours) but it ran so slow I gave up. One thing I could NOT do was install VM Additions. I used Nero Image Drive to mount VMA but was never sucsessfull. How did you get VMA to install? mi
OK...
Bearing in mind that this is my first experience with Virtual Server 2005 R2 (or any version thereof), I find that attaching an .ISO is tedious beyond belief compared with the technique for Virtual PC.
That said, I simply followed the instructions in HELP for adding a CD-Rom drive. Really, this is such a Byzantine procedure, even UNIX MOUNT commands seem more clear.
Then, I had to use Windows Explorer to locate the VM Additions .ISO file and create a shortcut to it, then copy its target address to the clipboard, then paste it into the dialog for adding the CD-ROM at the Known Image Files field, then REMOVING THE QUOTE MARKS before clicking "OK".
You should find that to work. HOWEVER, I'd advise you to go to the connect site and download the special VM Additions for this BETA and install it. Navigate to this one and save yourself some grief.
Installing a replacement VM Additions after having installed the one that came with Virtual Server 2005 R2 is a major-league PITA. It can be done but it's unnerving to say the least.
Hope this helps. -AS
